Top UK University Places for Sale

Top UK University Places for Sale The OE Blog Amidst the chaos of a failing university funding scheme “in free-fall” before it has even come into effect, the government has made a controversial and hugely criticised attempt to wrestle UK universities back onto the right track. Universities Minister David Willetts heads a coalition desperately scrambling to pull the shreds of their failing scheme about themselves, as the vast majority of English universities have elected to charge the maximum figure of £9000 tuition fees, making a mockery of the government calculations of a £7500 average figure. In what has been interpreted as a desperate and reckless move under enormous pressure to rectify the tuition fees debacle, Willetts has announced that the government are considering methods of creating extra university places outside the set ‘quota’ of public funding. Ostensibly, he claims the government is keen to explore methods of increasing the total number of university places available by allowing businesses and charities to sponsor “off-quota” places through schemes similar to that already outlined by employer KMPG. Willetts says that the creation of these extra places would free up public funding, thus allowing more students from lower income backgrounds the opportunity to attend university. But there has been an instant and overwhelming backlash to the plans by campaigners, students and academic institutions alike. They fear that this approval of “off-quota” places free from public funding opens an elitist and unfair avenue of opportunity for students whose parents are rich enough to pay for places at top UK universities. Chairman of the Sutton Trust Peter Lampl claimed the scheme would “deal a serious blow to social mobility, allowing the better-off to buy advantage in the university system”, whilst student union leaders immediately slammed the plans as “manifestly unfair and elitist”. Protesters have been quick to draw parallels with the old higher education system and its university: polytechnic divide; where richer students were able to pay for a better degree at an academically superior institution. UCU lecturers’ union leader Sally Hunt warned that the government risks “turning the clock back to a time when breeding rather than brains was required to get on in life”, whilst Cambridge Union President Rahul Mansigani protested “it simply cannot be the case that Daddy’s money can buy you a place at this university”. Making a complete mockery of the protest slogan “education not for sale”, this latest government gambit follows a long trail of poorly thought out and quickly executed plans and amendments within a scheme already revealing gaping holes and inconsistencies. David Barclay, Oxford University Student Union President, summed up the views of protesters and public alike when he declared the move simply indicated “total desperation from a government whose universities policy is in free-fall”.

The Naturalist Known as Theodore Dresier Essay - 1214 Words

The Naturalist known as Theodore Dreiser Throughout history there has been many great authors that have created even greater works, and some people refer to these as classics. However, what truly makes an authors’ work a classic? â€Å"The idea of a classic implies something that has continuance and consistence, and which produces unity and tradition, and transmits itself, and endures.† â€Å"A true classic, is an author who has expressed his thought, and who has spoken to all in his own peculiar style† (Hutchins). Theodore Dreiser is the epitome of this very definition. Dreiser drew upon his upbringing, life experiences, and the situations of his family members and transformed these collective experiences into his very first novel, â€Å"Sister†¦show more content†¦Much like many of his other themes and symbols, this one also came as a result of his experiences, most notably his childhood. Before he was born, his father owned a mill that eventually burned down. This event caused him to turn into a cynical, bitter man who abused and tortured his family mentally. This led to Dreiser coming to the conclusion that â€Å"man is a pawn in the hands of a blind or malevolent fate† (Warren 11). This idea of fate can be further explained as Dreiser accepting that no one can change the future and whatever is meant to happen to them will happen, whether it be good or bad. This quote shows him coming to grips with the idea of human suffering, which he later in life proves to be true in his quest for achievement in the big industrial cities. Blind fate exists heavily in the â€Å"Sister Carrie† and can be a positive or negative thing. For example, the main character Carrie becomes an immensely successful person while trying simply because of fate (where she and others happen to be at certain times). Another example is George Hurstwood who cheated on his wife and subsequently abandoning her by having an affair with Carrie (Dreiser). Blind fate plays its han d here by eventually leading to Hurstwood’s suicide after being abandoned by Carrie, much like he abandoned his wife and child. This is an example of blind fate simply because it was by chance that he met Carrie and ultimately because of that same chance that

Advertising Is An Visible Constant Presence Essay

Even when we’re blissfully unaware, we are being persuaded. In today’s media driven world, advertising is an almost constant presence. It is on television, in the films we watch, all over our social media accounts, and even plastered on the walls of locations that we visit every day. Advertising is meant to market a product or service to a consumer, utilizing mostly tactics of persuasion to do so. Because advertising is so continually present, companies must be more innovative than ever with their persuasive methods. Depending on the product or service, these methods vary but some of the popular ones include appealing to the internal attitudes of the consumer by using strategic and repetitive methods for the delivery of the message to appeal to the target audience. Virtually all industries do this, though a unique example of persuasion in advertising is found in the medical and health industries; the United States is one of the few countries that allows direct-to-consum er advertising for pharmaceuticals. The healthcare industry has always had the ability to advertise but with the new medical advertising, its budget for marketing has exploded as well. The Food and Drug Administration, also commonly referred to as the FDA, previously banned direct-to-consumer advertising for drug companies, but the restriction was lifted in 1997 and a new age of medical advertising was born. Previously, various medications and health services were found directly through a visit to a doctor’sShow MoreRelatedPepsi Lipton and Brisk651 Words   |  3 Pageswith viral ads in the month following the Super Bowl ad? Tesco Fresh and Easy Free Essays

I believe Tesco: â€Å"Fresh Easy† Supermarkets will be successful. The Fresh Easy name signals the two things it wants shoppers to think of it for: freshness and convenience (Horovitz, 2007). Tesco constantly re-enforces this message on the Fresh Easy Homepage; people want fresh and healthy food choices; they want things to be easy, Tesco provided just that with its line of supermarkets. We will write a custom essay sample on Tesco Fresh and Easy or any similar topic only for you Order Now Tesco supermarkets found a niche that United States retailers had not focused on, convenient fast access to fresh, healthy cost affordable natural foods. It is something many Americans have waited years for. As well as being marketed as a Fresh Easy supermarket, it is also marketed as an energy efficient organization which in this age of energy and resource conservation adds to its appeal. The supermarkets utilize efficient equipment in their stores and operations (Recruiting, 2007). Stores are designed to use 30% less energy than typical grocery stores its size, and recycling is a priority. Fresh Easy has been a savior tenant for many developers, eating up 14,000 square foot chunks of old space and dark drug stores (Retail, 2009). Its entrance into the United States was the first time Tesco entered a country without a supercenter format. Tesco did not want to become like Wal-Mart. Tesco launched its United States Operations with a small format neighborhood grocery store under the Fresh Easy name to differentiate its brand from its competitors. The supermarkets are relatively small, at about 10,000 square foot. Fresh Easy stores target customers in low to middle income locations. Tesco is betting that there is a demand for smaller stores closer to home with fewer products, making it easier to find things. The stores are placed near public transportation. Many of them are near or inside underground and railway stations, making it easy for commuters to pop into a store and grab a meal on their way home. Their advertising campaign includes references to environmentally friendly packaging and food free of artificial colors, flavors, and trans fats. The chains buy no TV or newspaper ads. When it enters a market, it mails $5 coupons to area residents. The stores are stocked with big names and in-house brands and offer more prepared entrees and side dishes than typical supermarkets (Semeuls, 2007). Their specialty is in prepared but not frozen foods, everything looks fresh. Everything is nicely repackaged in friendly pastel colors, simple graphics, and lowercase fonts. The stores are not over whelming. They look more modern and sophisticated than most supermarkets. The isles are wide and signs are clearly written. There is bright lighting and an uncluttered feel. Fruits and vegetables are neatly presented. There is an unexpectedly low price on items. Focusing primarily on California at this point, Fresh Easy is approaching the market as a â€Å"critical mass† store strategy in California, Arizona and Nevada. This strategy is to locate a â€Å"critical mass† of stores in a given region, similar to the Starbucks’ Walgreens’ strategy (Fresh, 2008). In doing this, consumer awareness is increased and marketing and advertising costs leveraged. From a positioning standpoint, it attempts to become the logical or defacto neighborhood grocer in the region, in part by virtue of having so many stores in the area (Fresh, 2008). The advancement of web based information technology has been an important catalyst for the recent proliferation of distribution sales channels in food retailing. Although multiple channels enable companies to reach consumers faster and in different market segments, they pose challenges to include channel conflict and pricing policy for the different channels. This could benefit consumers by companies having to reduce prices to stay competitive. American supermarkets have concentrated mainly on trying to make cost out of their supply chains. Goods are moved hundreds of miles to keep them cheap. This has encouraged supermarkets to make two sorts of foods: long lasting i. e. ried, canned, frozen, or otherwise preserved and that which is prepared from raw ingredients on site. British food retailers because stores can be so small that they have to switch from selling sandwiches at lunchtime to selling readymade suppers in the afternoon specialize in regular frequent deliveries to city stores. Their supply chains are more sophisticated. Tesco is an innovator with its supply chain. Tesco built a distribution center. Coupled with partner Wild Rocket Foods, Tesco selected U. S. produce vendors as suppliers. Tesco utilizes trucks with hybrid refrigeration vector units with internal partitions for frozen, chilled and ordinary goods. All Fresh Easy trailers include automatic refrigeration shut-off when optimum temperature is reached inside the cooling chamber as well as a complete engine shut-off once parked at the stores. Electrical stand-by technology minimizes the impact on the environment by using no fuel to run refrigeration units on the trailers while parked at the distribution center. Tesco could replace three deliveries with one. This makes it possible to sell groceries profitably in small stores at supermarket prices. Tesco makes fresh and easy available to the customers, but they also made the customers part of the solution to success. The Tesco scheme mails discount vouchers to customers encouraging them to return. It tracks every purchase to build one of the world’s largest databases. This finds correlations between purchases allowing Tesco to finely tune the product range in each store. I would venture to say that Tesco is on the right track to success with its wide mix of fresh food that is highly customer oriented and very accessible. With the stores in local neighborhoods and at very user friendly cost, these neighborhood targeted stores will succeed. . References Freshandeasy. com (2008). Freshandeasy. com. The JFK Assassination Essays (1482 words) - Single-bullet Theory

The JFK Assassination: Conspiracy or Single-gunman? Adolf Hitler, the Nazi dictator of Germany during World War II, once said, The bigger the lie, the more people will believe it. Although this may sound ludicrous, we can see many example of this in the world's history. One example would have to be the John Fitzgerald Kennedy's assassination. For over thirty years the people of the United States were led to believe that a single gunman shot and killed Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963, at 12:30 p.m. Maybe they were wrong. According to the old facts regarding the case of the JFK assassination, a single gunman killed Kennedy. On November 22, 1963, at 12:30 p.m. CST (Central Standard Time), Kennedy was riding in an open limousine through Dallas, Texas. At this time, Kennedy was shot in the head and neck by a sniper. He was then taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Later, police arrested Lee Harvey Oswald, a former U.S. Marine, at a nearby theater. By the next morning, Oswald was booked for the murder of President John F. Kennedy. Two days later, Jack Ruby, a Dallas nightclub owner killed Oswald while he was being moved from the city to the county jail. At a glance, the above story sounds as if this should be an open-and-shut case. After all, according to the facts above, Oswald must have killed Kennedy. However, you must take a closer look at this case. Many people who witnessed the murder of John F. Kennedy dispute the facts above, saying that they heard shots from places besides the book depository and other things that may contradict what is stated above. One of these witnesses, Abraham Zapruder, captured the entire assassination on his Bell and Howell eight-millimeter movie camera. This movie, cleverly called the Zapruder Film, is the single best piece of visual evidence in this case. In order to clearly understand the Zapruder Film, it is necessary to break it down into frames. The particular Bell and Howell movie camera that Zapruder was using ran at eighteen and three-hundredths (18.3) frames per second. When using this frame system, you must remember that all shots were actually fired several frames before the number that is assigned to them. For example, the fatal heard wound, called Z313, was probably fired at Z310, since it took 2-3 frames at 18.3 frames per second for the bullet to reach the victim. Also, you must remember that sound travels at about one thousand-one hundred (1,100) feet per second, or a little over half as fast as the Mannlicher Carcano's bullets. When keeping this in mind, it is expected that witnesses heard the shot at some point after the bullet passed. The following shows a break down of the frames of the Zapruder film: - The Presidential limousine first comes into view at frame 133 (the starting point of this timeline.) - The first shot at (or just before) Z187 would have passed through both Governor Connally and the President. - The second shot, which passed above the limousine at Z284, missed the President and hit the curb near witness James Tague. This caused his minor wound. - At Z313, the fatal shot occurs, which blew out major portions of the Presidents brain and skull. - A fourth shot occurred at Z323 (slightly 1/2 second after the fatal wound at Z313). Due to the proximity of this report to the one at Z313, as well as it's more distant origin, most witnesses were unable to hear this shot. Thus, the above is when the bullets hit either Kennedy or Connally, or passed through the frames of the Zapruder film (in the case of the second shot). Of the one-hundred seventy-eight (178) witnesses at Dealey Plaza, one-hundred thirty-two (132) said that they heard exactly three shots. If Oswald was a single gunman, it would have taken him at least 2.3 seconds to reload his Mannlicher Carcano rifle. However, the general consensus of the witnesses is that they heard a single shot, followed by silence, with the second and third shots bunched together. For example, Lee Bowers, one of the witnesses, testified, I heard three shots, one, then a slight pause, then two very close together. Also, Warren W. Taylor, a Secret Service

IAGO AS THE PROTAGONIST IN OTHELLO THE MOOR OF VENICE When reading Othello, society cannot help but to sympathize with The Moor. To rub salt in the wound Iago believed that his wife, Emilia, and Othello have been intimate. â€Å"And it is thought abroad that ‘twixt my sheets H’as done my office† (1.3.381-382). Compensation decision making analysis - Essay Example Also, in developing a compensation survey, it is also possible that employees needed to fill one type of benchmark job are in demand in certain labor markets, and employees needed to fill another benchmark job are in demand in other labor markets. For both of these reasons, namely that we may be competing with different organizations in different labor markets for one type of employee, and also that we may compete with different organizations in different labor markets for one job in the organization versus another, organizations must relate to a variety of labor markets when conducting a compensation survey. The process begins by looking at which pay areas are the most critical for the organization. In other words, it is looking at where the organization seems to be less effective in competing in the external market. An important indicator of a problem may be the inability to hire qualified applicants and/or high turn-over rates. These are common indicators that the pay set for that job may not be competitive. Another possible indicator of a problem could be low productivity or poor quality. Often the organization decides that it is best to use different job evaluation methods for different groupings of jobs in the organization. When pay is set, the scatter diagrams are usually different and the pay policy line and the y-intercept as well. For this reason an organization may have more than one pay structure. This can occur, for example, when the organization develops one pay structure for upper management and another for lower level employees. In the situation where an organization has more than one pay structure, it is important that questions of fairness are addressed. In general, the amount of overlap should reflect how similar the jobs are to each other; the more similar the jobs, the more overlap there should be, the less similar the jobs, the less

Construction of ideological and political education paradigm is both ideological and political education of practical reason and call return, but also a reflection on the value of ideological and political education and the integration of scientific rationality. Despite ideological and political education paradigm undisputed facts, but because of the special nature of the ideological and political education, the division of its type paradigm has divergent views. Depending on the standard paradigm of ideological and political education can be divided into different types. According to the different fields of application, the ideological and political education into ideological and political paradigm Education Paradigm and Paradigm. Teaching Paradigm is the path of ideological and political workers in the teaching practice followed, an important factor in the ideological and political education concepts, theories and techniques routes include. Paradigm is the ideological and political education theory researchers to obtain results of a path of thinking, conduct and mode of discourse. According to the status of ideological and political education, the content and methods of three perspectives, ideological and political education models can be classified as instrumental paradigm ideological and political education, ideological and political education knowledge-based paradigm and instill ideological and political education paradigm. Instrumental ideological and political education is an educational paradigm based on the existing ideological and political education in society to define, and the ideological and political education as a tool for countries in need of salvation, contrary to the nature of the ideological and political education, shelter human values ideological and political education paradigm function and meaning of functions. Knowledge-based paradigm of ideological and political education is an educational paradigm in accordance with the content of ideological and political education to define, excessive pursuit of knowledge economy era thirst for knowl edge, ideological and political education lost its essential function of teaching people to learn in life. Type instill ideological and political education paradigm is to educate those who use mechanical, simple way to inject educated fixed values à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ ¹Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ ¹and behavior required for specific social habits educational paradigm from teaching methods to the existing level of ideological and political education to define the way of education advocating simple infusion method, the object will be placed in the educated, passive acceptance of the status. Based on ideological and political education to understand the nature, it can be divided into ideological and political education paradigm paradigm and text Humanistic Paradigm. Text paradigm is to the book-oriented, policy-oriented policy document from the theory of ideological and political education philosophy and time mode. It is talk about abstract theory while ignoring students practical, pay attention to the text while ignoring students need logic, summed up only heavy books, than to men present. Humanistic Paradigm people-oriented, to meet the reasonable needs of people play human body, promote personal improvement and achieve comprehensive human development as the purpose and the starting point of ideological and political education. Students believe that education is both the object and the subject is education, not only education, guidance, encouragement, and respect, understanding, care and help students grow talent.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   At any time, ideological and political education in the ideological field will not disappear, cultivate socialist builders and successors, maintain its existing regime is always the same mission. However, in the ideological and political education course in order to achieve the set goals, we need to take into account the relationship between good individual needs and social needs, adhere to the people-oriented, and only in this way can always get peoples sincere support and cooperation in the implementation process. Marxist ideological and political education science paradigm is to be the times produced, it only emphasizes the social function of ideological and political education, but also take into account the individual features of ideological and political education, new perspective and height to locate the object of ideological and political education scientific and rational handling of the relationship between social needs and the needs of the individual. R ound development of people has become the main theme of ideological and political education. Purpose of ideological and political education in modern society continues to be diversified, humane, this is not a historical regression, on the contrary, ideological and political education of college students is in self-denial and constantly explore new trend of ideological and political education of survival and development.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Affected specific social environment, collectivism, value orientation in all areas of China has been fully developed and carried forward. This tendency to pursue the centrality of collective interests, the collective interests of one-dimensional thinking absolute priority in order to achieve collective interests, to achieve the desired goal of collective, personal interest in a certain range is weakened, or even limit. This situation is reflected in the ideological and political education objects, particularly reflected in the university student body, the college students is abstract, and college students into a passive capital of the people. Anti-Japanese War and the process of socialist construction, it unifies the ideological, college students gather strength, greatly enhancing the capacity-building and the construction of a new socialist enthusiasm of Chinese college students, the history of the mountain had also once appeared Students the countryside, the de velopment of the western region and other boom, visible contribution to the construction of the motherland Students tremendous power. However, with the economic and social development, multiculturalism began life full of college students, college students consciousness continues awakening, significantly enhanced sense of independence, this time should have timely adjustment of the kind of neglect, even limiting ideological and political education of college students individual needs, However, due to the lag of action, combined with ideological and political education for ideological and political education to understand the function of individual weaknesses, so that ideological and political education in modern society has become a university student can not fully reflect the thoughts of college students from reality pure class life. So, the social philosophical paradigm ideological and political education is facing serious challenges in modern society.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Common body in the ideological and political education, some common beliefs or views on the ideological and political educators recognized in the field of education and ideological and political nature of the Institute of Theoretical support, produced a series of ideological and political education ideas and genres, formed the ideological and political diversified Education development Paradigm. Thought educators engaged in educational activities, follows the norms, ways of thinking, mode of education, experience and learn from others through examples and so called ideological and political education paradigm, the paradigm ideological and political education mainly with the characteristics of ideological and political education of college students formed unique educational system, it provides tools for the concept of ideological and political education of college students. Construction of ideological and political education paradigm is both ideological and political education of practical reason and call return, but also a reflection on the value of ideological and political education and the integration of scientific rationality. B. Path Selection Despite ideological and political education paradigm undisputed facts, but because of the special nature of the ideological and political education, the division of its type paradigm has divergent views. Depending on the standard paradigm of ideological and political education can be divided into different types. According to the different fields of application, the ideological and political education into ideological and political education Paradigm Paradigm and Paradigm. Teaching Paradigm is the path of ideological and political workers in the teaching practice followed, an important factor in the ideological and political education concepts, theories and techniques routes include. Paradigm is the ideological and political education theory researchers to obtain results of a path of thinking, conduct and mode of discourse. An educational paradigm, ideological and political education as a tool for countries in need of salvation, contrary to the nature of the ideological and political education, ideological and political education paradigm obscured human value function and meaning of functions. Knowledge-based paradigm of ideological and political education is an educational paradigm in accordance with the content of ideological and political education to define, excessive pursuit of knowledge economy era thirst for knowledge, ideological and political education lost its essential function of teaching people to learn in life. Type instill ideological and political education paradigm is to educate those who use mechanical, simple way to inject educated fixed values à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ ¹Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ ¹and behavior required for specific social habits educational paradigm from teaching methods to the existing level of ideological and political education to define the way of education advocating simple infusi on method, the object will be placed in the educated, passive acceptance of the status. From the ideological and political education paradigm type of view, instrumental only pay attention to ideological and political education paradigm social needs, ignoring the overall development of the people, who put their professional education as a means to earn a living, pay attention to the teaching of the theory of norms preaching, not too much consider the relationship between political theory and the development of students, and students is that learning is the ideological and political theory needs of the country, we need to test, regardless of their own development, not to be combined with their own growth, there is no urgent need to learn, eventually leading to the ideological and political education value lost. Knowledge-based ideological and political education paradigm of the function of ideological and political education is only limited to imparting knowledge level, the ideological and political education equivalent to the intellectual, focusing on students knowledge indoctrination, ignoring the student body characteristics, according to the students knowledge learning logic to arrange teaching, moral education to make educated, humanistic value of training style education, ideological and political education is lost. Instill type of ideological and political education paradigm emphasizes subjectivity body, ignoring subjectivity object, ignoring the object carried by the culture, interests, needs and realities of life factors likely to cause differences in ideals and beliefs of society and college students real desire between educational purposes and human development out of touch, ideological and political education by subjectivity lost. Reasonable ideological and political education paradigm, ideological and political education subject and object of education closely linked, so that the subject of education, education and education paradigm object organic education recognize the overall composition. Paradigm has a point to ideological and political education practice features and content, can be thought of education, practice methods lead to a common paradigm-based research who are committed to the same rules and standards in the practice of science. Formation of ideological and political education paradigm established a common belief common body of ideological and political education groups, ways of thinking and common theoretical basis, so that researchers from scattered to integration, relatively close, you can conduct in-depth exchanges of academic community. The researchers thinking, ideas and methods of ideological and political education focused on the existing problems, to keep the achievements that have been made to deepen. It is due to the growing diversity of the characteristics of the network information content presented on both the mainstream concept of a strong impact, one-way interaction between the members of society as a guide for both methods produced profound effects sexuality, network development process by showing innovative mode of transmission for both itself has produced a strong challenge stereotyping. To enhance the ideological and political education, ideological and political education workers is an urgent need for large data essence, features in-depth understanding, and thus establish a large data thinking, that is comprehensive, ambiguity, open mind, and ultimately to develop a scientific accurate large data collection, and analysis judged the ability to choose. Big data can threaten the privacy and freedom of college students, exacerbated by its dependence on big data. Related Information Students Internet use is likely to be compromised, even by others or some unscrupulous people to grasp. Meanwhile, college students are actually a lot of information of the data, a dedicated, the corresponding database information system. Therefore, those in the more vulnerable party information university administrators and students will seriously affect the effectiveness of ideological and political education, which seriously threaten student privacy issues. In the data age, social dependence on big data is growing, but the reliability and interpretation of scientific certainty how big data is becoming a challenge in todays society. Causes of Criminal Behavior

In today’s time, deviance and crime plaque American society. There are vast degrees of deviance, from a simple shoplifter, to a car thief, to a killing machine with no conscience, otherwise known as a serial killer. How is this killing machine created? Where and how does this type of criminal behavior begin? The answers to these questions must be addressed in order to stop the formation of deviance. While searching for these answers, the nature vs. nurture is brought up. Scientist and psychologists have debated over whether a child’s upbringing forms their behavior or whether they are born with a personality disorder, or could it be their body type and brain set up? (Jones 1) Society may never truly know all the causes of this behavior but for now, they wrong upbringing can, without a doubt, increase the chances of violent behavior. It has been said for years that ones parents are the base to make someone the person they become as an adult. Parents are a young child’s role model, but as we grow older we start to have other influences in our lives. People such as our friends, teachers, and other family members are considered to be part of our outside environment. In today’s time we are seeing less nuclear families and more single parent households. (Waggoner 30) Kimberly J. Waggoner did a study called, â€Å"The Project of Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods† which followed 80 young kids, till the age of 30, to see what kind of an impact their childhood had on them as an adult. She found that without two reliable role models, it can make a difference in that child’s behavior. Waggoner 30) She makes a great point that, â€Å"Grandmothers often play an important role in preventing children from developing antisocial behavior, especially those children born to teen mothers. In essence, children with access to extended family and other role models can thrive in a single- parent home. † She also goes on to say, â€Å"Yet, some studies have found that boys raised by their birth mother and a stepfat her are no better off than boys raised by mom alone. † (Waggoner 30) The cause of this could be that the boys look at their stepfather as competitors, rather than role models, who normally help children develop their self-esteem. Boys need to have that male role model in their lives. Without a solid home environment, it could lead a child towards the first step to criminal behavior, which is delinquent behavior. It starts as young as preschool. The child shows aggressive behavior toward their peers, and is than deemed as an outcast. Most times, this creates poor peer relations and causes those children to b e with others who share similar behaviors; usually these relationships continue into adolescents and maybe even adulthood. Waggoner 28) A child’s environment and upbringing has a tremendous effect on who they become as an adult. â€Å"As an adult, we can choose the environment in which to live, and this will either positively or negatively reinforce our personality traits†¦ However, children are limited to the extent of choosing their environment, which accounts for the greater influence of environmental factors in childhood behavior,† says Caitlin Jones, a professor at the Rochester Ins titute of Technology. Jones 4) Even though all these things can cause criminal behavior, they are not the only causes. Parents could be great and do almost everything right and still have a criminal child on their hands. It is a great question they may never be answered, what makes some people commit vindictive criminal acts, while others could not even kill a fly? We may never truly know the answer but, there are plenty of theories on the brain of a criminal. An Italian psychiatrist by the name of Cesare Lombroso has done countless studies of the skulls of criminals and found, â€Å"†¦ each type of crime is committed by men with a particular physiognomic characteristics, such as a lack of a bred or an abundance of hair†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Rafter 69) In 1876 during an in depth study, Lombroso discovered most skulls of criminals were unusually small or malformed. Some of the skulls had a median occipital fossetta, and others had â€Å"monkeylike anomalies†. (Rafter 70) Criminals are said to look like everyone else, but there are little differences that to the normal person, go unnoticed. So they really do not look a whole lot different than the rest of us, yet they are still thought to be â€Å"backward intellectually compared to an honest man. †(Rafter 69) Another theory behind the criminal mind was brought up in the late 18th century by a German physician named Johann Gasper Spurzheim, and he came to what he thought, was an inescapable conclusion, â€Å"†¦ on the basis of numerous examples I have identified the primary cause of homicide, overdevelopment of the organ of Destructiveness, which is the seat of both negative and useful forms of destruction†¦It is commonly larger in men than women. (Rafter 78) Crimes are committed everyday; there are so many theories on the causes of crime one could talk about them for days. I believe both Lombroso and Spurzheim had great points; criminals are considered to be backward, which causes them to be vain, vindictive, remorseless, and undeterrable. Than, Spurzheim, believing in his organ of Destructiveness. Th ere is just one thing wrong with both of these theories; they leave out the women criminals. Men may be considered to be more physically violent than women but, they are just as capable as men at committing a violent act. Take the case of Andre Yates: in 2001, she systematically drowned her five children in a bath tub. Andre married a man by the name of Rusty Yates in 1993, and than she became pregnant six times in seven years, one ended in a miscarriage. Rusty insisted that Yates home school and take full care of the children herself. This placed heavy burdens on her and isolated her from social support. In early 2001, Andre lost her father and was prescribed antipsychotic drugs, she had her last child and went into postpartum psychosis. After drowning the children, Yates confessed she was not a good mother and was possessed by Satan. (Rafter 6) All the burdens of schooling, caring and cleaning up after five children can drive some mothers crazy. She could not handle all that stress than, after the trauma of losing her father, and having another baby, Andre Yates finally snapped. She is now incarcerated in a mental hospital. Cesare Lombroso also studied women criminals. He compared female offenders to their male counterparts and found â€Å"the few violent women exceed men in their ferocity and cruelty. (Rafter 71) Of course, there are far more crimes that are committed by men than women, yet women should not be eliminated from the world of crime. A criminal is a criminal, regardless of gender. Why do some offenders only commit one crime and others make a career out of it? A range of thoughts and theories exist. Some of those include: Kimberly Waggoner and all her ideas of childhood causes, outside environment, and our upbringing, Caitlin Jones and being able to choose our own environment as an adult to stop potential criminals. Also important are those of Nicole Rafter and the criminal brain, along with Lombroso, on women criminals and their male counterparts. Criminal behavior has been the subject for debate for centuries and will continue to be for centuries to come because, â€Å"Criminals are remorseless, incapable of resisting impulse to harm others, and morally savage, but in other aspects normal. † (Rafter 20) Hopefully, with all the knowledge we have and the studies yet to come, it will help to end the frustration that criminal justice psychiatrist experience while trying to fight crime, instead they will be able to understand, control and prevent crime.

Kate Chopin, the only child of 5 to survive into adulthood. Her piece The Story of an Hour can be perceived in different ways. It is just as the title describes, a story that occurs within the span of an hour. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Main Themes of The Story Of An Hour" essay for you Create order One could regard it as just a return from death stories and forget about it. However, this short story has a much more in depth meaning and attempts to make a statement about womens rights and maybe even humanity. In most cases death ensues grief or sorrow whereas in this story, death brings a mixture of those along with jubilation and a sense of newfound independence. Kate Chopin made the heroine of the story Louise portray how marriage can be confining and something like enslaving or a form of servitude rather than being a mutually loving partnership. Mr. Mallard our heroiners husband is believed to have died from a railroad crash which we can equate this to change in life or the act of moving on. Through his death, his wife would be transitioning from being a wife to being an individual with goals and aspirations. The story opens with the author making known that Mrs.Mallards heart trouble will play a role in the story and her sister felt that because of this, relaying the news of her husbandrs death had to be taken with great caution. Upon discovering the news, she understandably begins to cry and grieve in her room as she requests to be alone. Grief turns to reflection as she looks back on her life, and the reality of a new life without her husband present begins to settle in. Louise feels this overbearing feeling building up though she tries to fight it, she is aware of its presence. The feeling is far from grief as to be expected, but happiness for the new freedom that has been seemingly bestowed upon her. Chopin describes th e emotions of Louise and there is a variance in the language used. We see this in the quote And yet she loved him-sometimes. Often she did not showing how indifferent her emotions are in contrast to where her true feelings are seen through change in language. The simple statement above is stunted by What did it matter! What could love, the unsolved mystery, count for in the face of this possession of self-assertion which she suddenly recognized as the strongest impulse of her being! When the emotions Louise experiences become stronger, the syntax and diction changes. She ponders over the funeral day and knows that shell be brought to tears but for reason other than sadness. The bondage she feels marriage brings is for both men and women and she attempts to shut out the fact that she had feelings for her husband and through this we start to wonder just how sad this marriage really was. We can infer that Louise is an older women from the statement earlier in the story describing her as having a fair calm face with lines projecting repression. We later come to see that as being incorrect, the lines Chopin speaks of are a result of Louisers unhappiness with her marriage as well as possibly her heart condition. She attempts to bite back the words Free! Free! Free! (Chopin 4), however, in doing so she also seems content doing so. The death of her husband seemed to be seen as freedom of being under the rule of another and even freedom from a man she did not fully love. We dont know her first name at the beginning of the story and as the story progresses and t is revealed, we can see that Chopin does this in an attempt to show Louise trying to regain her identity lost upon marriage. Thinking on the time, wives of the latter part of 19th century were legally tied to their husbands will. However, widows did not bear the same obligations and had more recognition and thus, more of a handle on their lives. Regardless of how good of a husband Brently Mallard was to his wife, Chopin suggested that any relationship presents some limitation whether intentional or not. Mrs. Mallard looks outside her window and sees the trees with new life as spring approaches. All her eyes can see from the window are signs of new life which is worded very effectively as spring is equated with a sign of rebirth and renewal and her husband died around this time of year. In the statement that she would live for herself only in the coming years, Chopin suggests that the life she was living before was one in which her husband wanted for her rather than how she wanted to live.

What Is A Romantic Tragedy - 2502 Words

What is a Romantic tragedy? How are they useful when it comes to the genre of romantic films? Well, a romantic tragedy can be a very successful genre to work with. Although for some directors, making a romantic tragedy can become taxing on them or the actors. If something were to go wrong the movie ends up being worse that what it was meant to be. It becomes a catastrophic rendition of a romantic tragedy. When I first started taking this class, I found that there are a lot of different pieces in a film which can make or break it. A lot rides on how good the actors are at expressing feelings and not sounding robotic. These areas, or so I have come to learn, are generally categorized as: cinematography, special effects, the characters, their acting ability, the soundtrack, the plot, the cultural discourse, the narration and the surroundings. I feel that the discourses are particularly important in this genre as the subject matter. They should automatically be viewed as cultural artifacts because they reveal the different attitudes and values to those of the modernized viewer. Therefore, the director of this genre must be able to work really hard in order to get the viewers to pay money to become caught up in the drama of a romantic tragedy. The suspense of the viewer is often referred to as verisimilitude, or in layman s terms, the illusion or perception of reality.
